In preparation for Memorial Day, members of the Golden Valley church in Clinton, Missouri volunteered to help the VFW place American flags on the graves of fallen heroes in a local cemetery.

The list of names they were given included veterans of the Civil War, Spanish-American War, World War I, World War II, Korea, and Vietnam. As they stopped at each grave, they were reminded of what Jesus told His disciples: “Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends” (John 15:13). These brave men and women didn’t only lay down their lives for friends but for strangers—fellow country men and women who they would never meet.

Let us honor their sacrifice by striving not only for a good life here on earth, but a more abundant life as citizens of an eternal kingdom secured by the One who laid down His life for you.
