Members of the Bourbon Church recently spent a day serving hot chocolate and cookies and giving hats and gloves to community members who stopped by the local satellite site for WIC, a special supplemental nutrition program for women, infants and children.
WIC provides federal grants to states for supplemental foods, healthcare referrals, and nutrition education for low-income pregnant, breastfeeding and non-breastfeeding postpartum women, and to infants and children up to age five who are found to be at nutritional risk.
The satellite site happens to the former Bourbon church school facility, and church members who participated were blessed by the opportunity to serve their community and build relationships with staff and people who rely on these services.
Plans for similar community service events are underway.
